My love for the Minnesota Twins actually started with the 2004 NBA Western Conference Playoffs.  I was in my second year of college and still wandering in between majors, wondering what I should do with the rest of my life. Then the Timberwolves had their great playoff run, which ended all too soon, thanks to Sam Cassell’s shoddy back.  After the Wolves were eliminated, I was like a junkie without a fix. Where could I go to satisfy a craving only suspense-filled mind games could fill?

Baseball! Baseball had always been a part of my life, but growing up in the 90s in Minnesota meant you were a Vikings fan above all else. Everything took a backseat to the Vikings.  Now, in 2004, seeing there was a game on every day and realizing how intricate and brutal the sport really was, that was the summer I fell in love with baseball.

And like any obsessed addict, I found out every single detail of the sport, specifically the Twins, watched every Baseball Tonight and discovered a passion I’d never experienced before. I got my degree in Broadcast Journalism from the University of Minnesota and now I’m working my way into the sports producing field. I just moved to Peoria, IL to be the 6 o’clock newscast producer at WMBD. But my ultimate goal is to produce Baseball Tonight. One day, one day. But the hardest part of moving to Peoria was not being able to listen to Dick and Bert every night and watching Johan, Torii, Justin and Joe do their thing.  So, I caved and bought MLB Extra Innings. It’s satisfying my fix pretty well, but I wish you could choose which announcing team you listen to. Same with the playoffs. We spend 162 games with one play-by-play team, and then when our team gets to the most important games of the entire season, we have to listen to Joe Buck? Unacceptable. In the months to come, I’ll write more about why I love the Twins and, like any responsible fan, what they need to do to be better. My name is Krystal and I am a Minnesota Twins fan.

I am a baseball fan. I think baseball was created by God and evolved into the game we have today. I am also a tragic optimist. With a few exceptions I find the silver lining in most things. Two of these exceptions being that I call the foul pole a foul pole and the foul line a foul line even though it is not fair. So recently I have been fretting over the fact that I cannot remember anything anymore. Like day to day things. I refer to it as my ‘Ralphi’ complex. Which is an acronym I created to remember why I forget so much. ‘Ralphi’ is a combination of the following: Repression, age, lead poisoning, head injury. So, I am almost feeling sorry for myself when I get to thinking. Now, when I begin to feel sullen my thoughts invariably go to baseball. Baseball keeps the veil of sadness from smothering me and lifts it ever so slightly so that it hovers above me much as the metrodome has hovered over the Twins all of these years. Yes, the season seemed so short this year. I tried to watch every game I could of the Minnesota Twins. Then I thought how cool it was that the local Fox station rebroadcasts the game the following day so I could see it again for the first time. Then I felt so good about my memory loss. Next year I get to watch the game in real time and over the course of the next 10 hours it will get consumed by Ralphi. This is great. Most of you will rarely get to see what I will see most every day. A double header.
